Two friends, one very frustrating car search

Autodice started the way a lot of good things do: with a bad experience and a long conversation about it.

We were two friends trying to buy a used car. Between us we had spreadsheets, a dozen browser tabs, three listing sites full of virtually identical vehicles all at different prices, and a nagging sense that the person across the desk understood this a lot better than we did. Every step involved a guess. Was this a fair price? Was there a better one two towns over? Was the seller's first number their real number?

There was no good way to find out. So we built one.

We flipped the search around

Most car sites hand you a catalogue and wish you luck. You scroll through hundreds of listings, most of which are wrong for you, and the ones that look right are gone by the time you call.

Autodice works the other way. You tell us what you're after, and the sellers come to you.

You add the vehicles you're interested in to your offers — the make, the model, the year range, the budget, the condition you'll accept. And if you don't know yet, that's fine, because most people don't. Miles, our AI sales concierge, will work through it with you until you land on the vehicle that actually fits your life. Sellers who have that vehicle are matched to your request and send you real offers on the specific car you asked for. You see them side by side, on one screen, with nothing hidden.

Everyone can see where things stand, and that's what makes it work. You find out what a car is actually worth without having to haggle for it, and the seller knows exactly what they need to put forward. The best deal comes to you instead of being something you have to extract.

Meet Miles

Miles is genuinely good at the part of car buying that's hardest to do alone: working out what you actually need. He'll ask about the driving you do, the people and things you carry, what you're towing, what you're spending. He knows to ask a truck buyer about payload and a family buyer about car seats. He'll pull up ratings and reviews, put two vehicles side by side so you can see how they really differ, and tell you honestly when the car you're leaning toward isn't the right fit.

He'll also handle the parts nobody enjoys. Booking a test drive around your schedule. Explaining how financing actually works on an older vehicle before you fall in love with one you can't finance the way you hoped.

Miles isn't there to sell you anything. He's there so you walk into this knowing as much as the person on the other side of the table.

And it works the same way for sellers

We built Autodice for buyers, but a marketplace only works if both sides come out ahead — and sellers were dealing with their own version of the same problem. Listings shouted into the void. Leads that went nowhere. No real sense of where their pricing sat against the rest of the market on any given day.

So sellers get the same transparency buyers do. When you make an offer, you can see where it ranks against the others on that request — not who made them or what they offered, just where yours sits. If you're not in front, you'll know that, and you can decide what to do about it or move on to the next one.

That's a very different thing from guessing. It means the offers you spend time on are ones you have a genuine shot at, matched to buyers who have told us exactly what they're looking for and are ready to move. No cold leads, no bidding blind, no wondering why the phone didn't ring.

What we're trying to do

Buying a used car should not require you to become an expert in buying used cars.

That's the entire idea. Take out the guesswork, make the pricing honest, and give both sides of the deal the same information at the same time. We're still two friends who didn't like how this worked — we've just got a lot more people helping now.
